Pixmac offers a ‘New Deal’ for Microstock Photographers

After a pretty dismal showing from most microstock agencies during 2010, today the relative newcomer Pixmac has revised its contributor aggreement significantly.

It’s built up a best-of-all-worlds policy which will really help them stand out from the crowd of relatively new agencies in the long term, and makes guarantees to photographers which I’m hoping will spread throughout the microstock marketplace, and bring back something of what microstock used to be like.

The short version is this:

  • All commissions will now be at least 30% (40% after $200) or $0.25 of the sale price (whichever is higher)
  • The price (and thus commission) per image will rise based on the sales of that image (like dreamstime), so the best images will be rewarded with increasinly higher earnings over time.
  • No exclusivity.
  • Increased focus on openness, attribution and fair partnerships with photographers.

The problem is in a very small traffic, so incresing commissions is not than a slight change in the revenue. Like with dreamtime you need to ask yourself if is better to stay with fair trader or with sharks, eating what they leave as too little for their jaws

Pixmac may be pretty small now compared to the big guys, but they have the best SEO of the bunch, and a good backing in modern technology and practices. It’s one of the few agencies I expect good things from in the current climate 🙂

Thank you guys. Sure there’s a pile of challenges still waiting for us 🙂 On the other hand it’s good to build history of every microstocker now rather than later…
